The Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System Extended Care Service has a great full-time opportunity in Geriatrics for a Geriatric Physician. A Geriatrician with a minimum 2 years in clinical geriatric experience is preferred.

As an Inpatient Geriatrician, for Extended Care, primary responsibility is providing comprehensive healthcare to residents in the Biloxi Community Living Center and Transitional Care Units.

Outpatient clin! ical coverage will be assigned as needed.

Experience ! in palliative/hospice care is desirable.

Basic computer familiarity is essential; CPRS experience is preferred.

Extended Care Service of the GCVHCS is located at the Biloxi Ms.

The Community Living Center faces the Biloxi Back Bay and affords our patients a rich and beautiful environment.

All aspects of health are maintained for both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The physical and mental health needs of our veterans are treated through various programs and activities.

The VA Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System Extended Care Service is located just north of the Gulf of Mexico in Bi! loxi Mississippi.

The community provides a rich environment of historical culture, and many recreational diversions.

Residents of the coast enjoy the Â" fun in the sunÂ" atmosphere filled with festivals for all occasions.

With 26 miles of 12 casino resorts, 22 golf courses, 237 restaurants and 42 cultural attractions thereÂ's not a weekend that entertainment canÂ't be found.

EDRP:
The Physician selected for this position MAY be eligible to apply for an award up to the maximum limitation under the provisions of Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) subject to the availability of funds. (EDRP applies to new hires only. Current VA employees are not eligible).

KEY REQUIREMENTS

U.S. Citizenship

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.

DUTIES:
An MD or DO degree with board certification in Family Practice or Internal Medicine with a minimum 2 years in clinical geriatric experience is preferred.

Although not a requirement, it is preferred that the applicant be board certified in Geriatrics with additional training and/or experience in Palliative/Hospice Care and Pain Management.

The Extended Care Inpatient Geriatrician is responsible for providing comprehensive healthcare to inpatients in the Biloxi NHCU/IMC and/or other Extended Care Programs as required.

Basic computer familiarity is essential; CPRS experience is preferred.

Responsible for the assessment and treatment of inpatients in the NHCU/IMC Biloxi units of Extended Care.

The incumbent will rotate ON Call (customarily 1:4) for the NHCU/IMC inpatient unit.

Exercises initiative, considerable judgment and independence of actions in accomplishing responsibilities.

E! nsures that the Network mission, vision and values are achieved, while operating in accordance with Veteran Administration (VHA) policies, Network policies, and standards of federal professional and accrediting agencies external to VHA.

Anticipates the needs of the NHCU/IMC patients and provide extraordinary services. Meets all assigned performance measures. Specific responsibilities include:

Incumbent will perform the duties of this position in addition to other responsibilities as developed or agreed upon in concert with the Medical Center Director, Chief of Staff and Chief of Extended Care Services.

Serves on assigned interdisciplinary teams, which! continually strive for excellence in patient care and customer service! .

Promotes team building by cooperation with other disciplines, health care staff and public agencies.

Controls cost of polypharmacy by reviewing medicine for appropriateness and VA policy.

Establishes and maintains good working relations with groups and organizations both internal and external to the Medical Center.

Ensures open lines of communication with the team, external customers, Chief, Extended Care Service, and other disciplines, as well as affiliating agencies.

Responds promptly to congressional and customer inquires assigned by the Chief, Extended Care Service.

The Physician for Extended Care Service will be directly accountable to the Chief of Extended Care.

The selectee will be responsible for the medical care of Community Living Center residents (and/or Community Program outpatients) with a focus on rehabilitation, short term/ long term wound and skilled care. The care will be delivered with a holi! stic approach embracing the cultural transformation concepts in geriatric care. The incumbent is responsible for the application of specialized, advance clinical health care knowledge and skills in collaborative practice in the areas of direct clinical care consultation, education of Veterans, families and personnel in the Community Living Center. He/she must execute position responsibilities that demonstrates leadership, experience and creative approaches to the management of complex client care

The selectee will be responsible for Community Living Center residents and Home Based Primary Care patients as the services needs.

For the outpatient setting, the physician provides treatment to frail, chronically ill veterans in their homes.

The patient population served includes persons with a spectrum of clinical illnesses.

Duties include but are not limited to utilizing clinical assessment to develop plans of care which reflect therapeutic, e! ducational, preventative and rehabilitative aspects of care; performing!

comprehensive patient assessments that include health history, physical examination, evaluation of deviations from the norm and age specific disease screening, immunizations and health counseling; refers veterans to specialty clinics when indicated;

performs phlebotomy procedures for obtaining specimens for diagnostic procedures etc.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Requirements:
(1) CITIZENSHIP:
Must be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).

(2) EDUCATION:
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approve! d schools are:

(a) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(b) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(c) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted license.

(d) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part III, chapter 1.

(3) License and Registration:
(a) Physicians (Except Residents). Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the sta! te of license if this is a requirement for continuing active, current l! icensure.. The facility Director may waive this license requirement if the physicians is to serve in a country other than the United States and the dentist has licensure in that country.

(b) Impaired Licensure. A physician who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 14, section B, chapter 3 of this part.

(4) Physical Requirements:

(5) English Language Proficiency:
Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).
