Social Studies School Service was founded in 1965 and is based in California, but this position is remote.

Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Assistant Editor to join our publishing team. As an Assistant Editor, you will play a vital role in supporting the overall editorial process, ensuring the smooth execution of projects and publications. You will collaborate closely with the Project Editor and other team members to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality content. This role requires exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to multitask effectively.

  • The Assistant Editor is responsible for supporting team Project Editors in making sure projects run smoothly from inception to publication. This involves a multitude of steps and processes working with the Content and Art teams. The work involved with the launch, execution, and delivery of a product includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • Assist with all aspects of the editorial process, from manuscript submission to final publication, review and edit content for clarity, grammar, and style, ensuring adherence to established guidelines and standards.
  • Assist with file and content management, communicating project details, and other crucial aspects of the editorial production process.
  • Collaborate with authors, writers, and contributors to address editorial queries, provide feedback, and facilitate revisions as needed.
  • Coordinate with various stakeholders, such as designers, illustrators, and production teams, to ensure seamless workflow and timely delivery of materials.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including schedules, deadlines, and author contracts.
  • Assist in the preparation of manuscripts for typesetting, ensuring proper formatting and layout consistency.
  • Proofread page proofs for errors and make necessary corrections.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in publishing and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
  • Image research, as needed

Digital Tasks:

  • Where required, the Assistant Editor will execute the development or conversion of content from print to digital. As required, the Assistant Project Editor will:
  • work with Art/Design team to ensure the smooth upload of all digital content and ensure that QA is conducted after upload.
  • assist in the creation of digital activities/content. The Assistant Editor will work with vendors and freelancers to create new content as well as review, correct items as needed.
  • Production
  • Working cross-functionally with the Purchasing/Operations team, the Assistant Editor will coordinate with the Publications Manager, to review proofs as needed.
  • Provide clearly defined corrections/revisions in a timely manner to Purchasing/Operations
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of proven experience in editorial roles, preferably in educational publishing, with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Strong command of the English language, including excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills.
  • Proficiency in using editing tools and software, such as Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a keen eye for spotting errors and inconsistencies.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with authors, team members, and external stakeholders. Proficiency with publishing processes, including copyediting, proofreading, and typesetting.
  • Knowledge and use of style guides and editorial standards, along with familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using platforms such as JIRA and Smartsheets
  • Knowledge of copyright laws and permissions clearance processes.
